Elefantes pintores

En la ciudad de Chian Mai, Tailandia, existe un arte para deleite de los turista que vale su peso en mucho más que oro, pues estas obras se venden a precios muy elevados.

Un equipo periodístico encabezado por Eddie Fitte, viajó a Tailandia y reveló el trasfondo oscuro que rodea a los elefantes que pintan. En apariencia son animales saludables y felices que pintan hermosos cuadros con sus trompas. Sin embargo, son esclavos del entretenimiento.

El tortuoso sistema de entrenamiento para estos animales comienza apenas nacen, cuando son salvajemente separados de sus padres. Se les somete a una vida de miseria y a una serie de prolongadas torturas para que aprendan a obedecer.

Estas torturas incluyen clavos oxidados con los que sus entrenadores les pinchan las orejas y cadenas de metal que sirven para atarles las patas y que así no puedan moverse.

Para empezar, los cuadros que los elefantes pintan no son producto de su creatividad. En realidad durante el espectáculo todos mantienen atentos la mirada sobre el elefante y su pintura y por lo mismo, pasan por alto lo que realmente está ocurriendo. En todas las presentaciones de este tipo que se hacen en los distintos parques de Tailandia cada elefante tiene a su cuidador que durante el proceso creativo se mantiene a un lado del animal donde prácticamente no se ve, ya que éste lo tapa con su gran cuerpo. Es precisamente así como logra ocultar lo que está haciendo. Mientra el cuidador aparenta mirar la tela donde el elefante está pintando, con su mano aprieta y tira de la oreja del elefante indicándole con diferentes señas que ya le ha enseñado, qué tipo de lineas trazar. Así, el cuidador aprieta y empuja hacia arriba y hacia abajo para obtener una línea vertical o tira de ella hacia los lados para obtener una horizontal. Para animar al elefante a hacer manchas, tira de la oreja hacia adelante en dirección al lienzo.

Pero todavía hay más, no sólo el diseño no es creado por el elefante, que no tiene ni idea de lo que hace, sino que siempre pinta exactamente el mismo dibujo ¡por años! Es por eso que hay varios elefantes pintores y cada uno de ellos tienen una imagen propia que repiten una y otra vez.

Monstruoso sistema de reclamo turístico a mi entender y desde luego muy rentable para estos miserables y abusivos cuidadores. Es algo que me apena bastante teniendo en cuenta que Tailandia en uno de los principales destinos turísticos y que es fácil que cientos de personas al año vengan a occidente portando una pintura de elefante impregnada de dolor y sufrimiento a costa de muchos animales.

 To begin with, the paintings that the elephants paint are not the product of their creativity. Actually during the show everyone keeps an eye on the elephant and his painting and therefore overlook what is really happening. In all the presentations of this type that are made in the different parks of Thailand, each elephant has its caretaker who, during the creative process, stays on one side of the animal where it is practically invisible, since it covers it with its great body. This is precisely how he manages to hide what he is doing. While the caretaker appears to look at the fabric where the elephant is painting, with his hand he tightens and pulls on the elephant's ear indicating with different signs that he has already taught him, what kind of lines to draw. Thus, the caregiver squeezes and pushes up and down to get a vertical line or pulls it sideways to get a horizontal line. To encourage the elephant to make spots, pull the ear forward towards the canvas.

 But there is still more, not only the design is not created by the elephant, who has no idea what it does, but always paints exactly the same drawing for years! That is why there are several painters elephants and each of them have a self-image that they repeat over and over again.

 Monstrous tourist claim system to my understanding and of course very profitable for these miserable and abusive caretakers. It is something that pains me a lot considering that Thailand in one of the main tourist destinations and that it is easy for hundreds of people a year to come to the West carrying an elephant painting impregnated with pain and suffering at the expense of many animals.
